Economic equality is a political ideology centered on the belief that all individuals within a society should have roughly the same level of material wealth, income, and access to economic resources. Proponents of economic equality argue that large disparities in wealth and income lead to social injustice, undermine democracy, and create barriers to individual opportunity and well-being. The ideology does not necessarily demand absolute sameness in economic outcomes, but it emphasizes minimizing the gap between the richest and poorest members of society, often through redistributive policies such as progressive taxation, social welfare programs, and public provision of essential services like healthcare and education.

The roots of economic equality as a political ideal can be traced back to ancient philosophical traditions, including the writings of Plato and early Christian teachings, which advocated for communal sharing and the moral dangers of excessive wealth. In the modern era, the concept gained prominence during the Enlightenment, as thinkers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau critiqued the social and moral consequences of economic inequality. The rise of industrial capitalism in the nineteenth century intensified debates about economic justice, leading to the emergence of socialist and communist movements that placed economic equality at the center of their platforms. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, for example, argued that true freedom and democracy were impossible without the abolition of class distinctions and the equal distribution of resources.

Throughout the twentieth century, economic equality remained a central concern for various political movements, including social democracy, labor movements, and anti-colonial struggles. While some countries experimented with radical forms of economic leveling, such as collectivization and state ownership, others pursued more moderate approaches, seeking to balance market economies with strong social safety nets and regulatory frameworks. The ideology of economic equality continues to shape contemporary debates about globalization, automation, and the role of government in addressing poverty and inequality, reflecting enduring questions about fairness, justice, and the good society.
